BOSTON/JERSEY CITY – EnBW North America announced today a new leadership team that is positioned to steer the clean energy company to a successful offshore wind lease auction in the New York Bight. Long-term acting President and CEO, Dr. Lars Gonschorek, will serve as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, bringing with him over a decade of experience in offshore wind development. Gonschorek has been responsible for establishing EnBW’s early presence on the ground in the US, advancing offshore wind markets on both the East and West Coasts and has been instrumental in building a team of top-tier talent in North America.
Damian Bednarz will serve as Managing Director for EnBW North America after shaping the company’s community-first engagement strategy with key stakeholders and coalitions in the New York Bight over the last 18 months as External Affairs Director. Bednarz’s prior experience of advancing clean energy issues and projects at the local and federal level and tenure in senior roles at the Obama-Biden Administration’s Department of Energy, have positioned him as a strong force in developing and delivering EnBW’s mission in the United States.
The leadership team will continue to build out EnBW North America’s mission and growing team in the US, committed to partnering with communities to deliver lasting economic and environmental benefits to achieve shared climate goals. The Biden-Harris administration's swift action in the first half of 2021, resulting in a target for 30GW of operational offshore wind by 2030, creates further certainty for investment and commitment to the US offshore wind market.
“After being involved with North America operations for the last three years, I’m looking forward to continue leading the team to further success in the US offshore wind market,” said Dr. Gonschorek. “The US market is primed and ready for major offshore wind development on both Coasts, and our seasoned team is equally ready for the challenge.”
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lead this incredibly talented team as we develop offshore wind and a clean energy economy that keeps our communities at the center of our efforts. We can meet our shared economic and climate goals while also expanding the benefits of this new industry throughout the US,” added Bednarz.
The new leadership team signals a dedicated focus to responsibly develop the US offshore market and a strong commitment of listening directly and frequently to stakeholders and impacted communities. Since opening its doors in the US in 2018, the North America team has held over 300 meetings with over 150 unique stakeholders, hired a Fisheries Liaison and developed a Fisheries Communication Plan to engage the commercial and recreational fishing community before obtaining a federal offshore lease, signed the first Mutual Benefits Agreement with fishermen on the West Coast, launched a supplier database, and is investing in local supply chain education to expand the offshore wind opportunity to all.
